Dr. Weissleder has been the Director of CSB at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) since its inception in 2007. He is the Thrall Professor of Radiology and Professor of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School, and Attending Clinician in Interventional Radiology at MGH. Dr. Weissleder is also a member of the Department of Systems Biology at HMS and the Harvard Cancer Center. He is also a member of MGH’s Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) and participates in several other Institutional Committees.

The Weissleder group develops molecular technologies for noninvasive imaging of cellular function, and uses these technologies to study basic human biology and create next generation diagnostics and therapeutics. Many important biological processes occur deep inside our body. Their study requires new technologies to understand function at the single cell level. To develop such technologies, he pursues fundamental advances in chemistry, molecular engineering, bioengineering and modeling. His work also takes advantage of imaging tissues and cells obtained by minimally invasive image guided interventions. His primary interests are in cancer and in inflammation. His work on imaging, nanomaterials and miniaturized sensing technologies has led to a number of new technologies and advanced clinical trials. He is a cofounder of T2Biosystems and Lumicell. Dr. Weissleder is currently the principal investigator of several National Institute of Health grants and consortia. He has published over 940 publications (h-index >185) in peer reviewed journals and has authored several textbooks. He is one of the top 100 ranking scientists in the world according a world ranking list (PLOS Biology, August 12, 2019)

He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Inventors and the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). His work has been honored with numerous awards including the J. Taylor International Prize in Medicine, the Millenium Pharmaceuticals Innovator Award, the AUR Memorial Award, the ARRS President’s Award, The Society for Molecular Imaging Lifetime Achievement Award, the Academy of Molecular Imaging 2006 Distinguished Basic Scientist Award, the 2008 RSNA Outstanding Researcher Award and gold medalist of the ESR. In 2014 Dr. Weissleder was named by Thomson Reuters as one of the “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds”.
